Henrico

Henrico County is home to many communities with rich histories.

Varina was once home to John Rolfe and his wife, Pocahantas, the daughter of the King Powhatan. Several battles in the late Revolutionary War took place partially in Henrico, as well as many in the Civil War. Until 1842, the entirety of the City of Richmond was part of Henrico County, until Virginia instituted its system of independent cities.

In the East, neighborhoods such as Highland Springs and Sandston sprung up around a railway line on what is now Nine Mile Road. In the West, streetcar lines radiating out from the city led to the development of Westhampton and Willow Lawn. The rise of the automobile led to widespread conversion of farms and plantations into suburban subdivisions and strip malls, especially in the West. Places like Tuckahoe and Short Pump became havens for Whites looking to move out of the city after World War II.

Now, Henrico’s population is higher than the City of Richmond itself. Although Western Henrico has been economically booming, attracting large employers and expensive housing developments, Eastern Henrico has been left quieter, and often poorer. Our goal in Henrico is to create affordable opportunities for homeownership across the county. The Henrico County government has been a constant supporter of our work, granting us funding as well as land on which to build.
